A Fun After School Activity | SophiasStyle.com

Here’s a fun game you can play with your kids after school. All it takes is a little communication and imagination! When the kids come home after a day at school, ask them to tell you three noteworthy things about their day – such as what was served for lunch in the cafeteria, or if they got a good grade on their homework.

The fun part (and I think your little ones will agree) is that one of these three things is untrue and Mom or Dad has to guess which one it is! This is a game our CEO at SophiasStyle.com plays with her own daughter everyday – she always looks forward to hearing about her day at school and having fun at the same time. Try it with your own kids and see what they come up with!

And don’t forget to prepare them for school with our kids school uniforms at discount prices. You can relax, spend quality time with your children and know that school uniforms don’t have to cost a fortune anymore!

Try this game with your kids and share with us!

Crafts With Peppermint Candies

Spread holiday cheer in a creative way this year using those little red and green peppermint candies we all know and love. If you’re all about saving time and money shopping for girls clothes at SophiasStyle.com, then these “peppermint projects” are right up your alley! They are inexpensive, quick and easy and most of all fun!

Peppermint Candle
All you need for this project is a white pillar candle in the size of your choice, peppermints (of course!) and strong glue of some sort (I suggest a glue gun or super glue). Glue unwrapped peppermints around the outside of the candle in any arrangement you like. Fill the entire space or just glue a few here and there for a touch of festivity. Light the candle and set it out as a pretty holiday centerpiece for your table!

Peppermint Wreath Ornament
Gather five green peppermint candies, your trusty glue stick and some string for this project. Glue the unwrapped candies in a circle and then attach a string to the back with glue and hang it upon your tree! Get even more creative and add little red hot candies to the wreath for the “berries” or attach the wreath to a wrapped package for a unique gift tag.

Peppermint Cupcakes
If you’re making cupcakes for the holidays already, all it takes is one more simple step to make your treats festive. After you frost your cupcakes, plop an unwrapped peppermint or two on top. That’s it – you’re done! You could also use tiny candy canes. They are the perfect size for the top of a cupcake and are just as delicious!

Happy crafting and most of all Happy Holidays from SophiasStyle.com – your home for discount girls clothing from top designer brands.

Test Your Newborn Baby’s Reflexes | SophiasStyle.com

Did you know about all of the reflexes that babies are born with? A family friend just had a new baby and we got together last week for dinner to visit their new arrival. Of course I gave little Sarah her birthday gift of new baby clothes from SophiasStyle.com, but the highlight of the evening was when they showed us all of the reflexes that the new baby has. Not only are these reflexes really interesting, but they are completely necessary and help a baby adapt to life’s little challenges. If you’ve got a little newborn at home, try some of these out and test your own baby’s reflexes – you’ll be delighted and amazed!

My favorite was the Stepping Relfex. Her parents held the baby up so her feet were over a flat surface. She started to “walk,” placing one foot in front of the other! Doctors say this reflex disappears after the baby is about 4 months old.

Another interesting reflex is called the Palmer Grasp. If you touch the palm of your baby’s hand, his or her fingers will automatically curl up around your finger and “hold it.” This reflex also explains why it’s so hard to make a baby’s handprints! It usually disappears around 6 months of age.

I think the cutest one was what’s called the Tonic Neck or “Fencing” Reflex. When the baby was on her back and she turned her head to one side, she bent the opposite arm and leg and extended the adjacent arm and leg. Doctors call it the Fencing Reflex because it looks like the baby is in fencing position. On guard!

Have fun with your new little bundle of joy!

‘Tis the Scarf Season! | SophiasStyle.com

Last night my mother and sister were trying on neck scarves, experimenting with different ways to tie them. It seems like trendy girls of all ages are wearing scarves these days in so many unique ways. Just in time for winter, SophiasStyle.com brings you a how-to on different ways to twist and shape our favorite girls outerwear accessory. Your little trendy girl is sure to love it!

Simple
This is the style we are probably most familiar with and it truly lives up to its name. I wear my scarves this way most often! Fold your scarf in half the long way and drape it over your neck. Then simply pull the loose ends through the loop you made and adjust the knot to as tight or as loose around your neck as you’d like. You can never go wrong with this style!

Wrap
Anything goes with this style! Wrap the scarf around your neck backwards so that the ends are on your back. Then pull each end over the opposite shoulder so it continues to wrap. Keep going until the scarf is at your desired fit and length. The more unstructured the better!

Straight
It’s so simple you almost don’t even think about it! Wearing your scarf straight over the neck is always a stylish option.

Happy wrapping, and don’t forget to shop our girls coats for even more fun and fashion!

Beat Cabin Fever With Her Easter Dress!

I don’t know about you, but all of the kids (and admittedly even some of the adults) here at SophiasStyle.com headquarters are down with a case of cabin fever! After a colossal snowstorm dumped nearly a foot of snow on the area, local schools are closed for the third day in a row. I’ve heard from a lot of moms that the kids are starting to go crazy with boredom. It sounds like it’ll be back to school tomorrow, but who knows how much more snow we’ll get this winter?

We could have a lot more snow days before it’s all over, so it’s great to be prepared to fight the next case of cabin fever. Here are a few “remedies” that will hopefully keep your little trendy girl and her friends occupied and happy!

Dig out your girls Easter dress from last year and encourage your little girl and her friends to put on a fashion show for each other! Line your couch cushions end to end across the living room for an impromptu catwalk and let them strut their stuff! She doesn’t get many opportunities to wear that special occasion or Easter dress anyway, so this is a great time to make some creative use of it. Grab your camera and have Mom, dad or an older sibling be the fashion show photographer for the event. She’s sure to have fun modeling her favorite outfits all at once!

On a snow day kids of all ages love to frolic in the fluffy white stuff – sledding, making snow angels and of course building the perfect snowman. This year, try making your snowman a fashionista snow woman! Decorate her with your little girl’s favorite accessories – think hair bows, headbands, hats or even a stylish handbag. Just use your imagination and have fun.

I hope you have fun making traditional snow day activities more fun, and hopefully this helps cure a little bit of cabin fever. If not, hang in there – spring will be here eventually!

What are some of your favorite snow day activities? We’d love to hear from you!

Backpacks For Your Trendy Girl On the Go!

When I was a little girl I remember all the things I did with my backpack. Of course I filled it with paper and pencils and took it to school, but I used it for so many other purposes as well. My book bag was my go-to overnight bag for sleepovers in grade school. I took it along for all day bike rides and picnic lunches with my friends during the summertime. My sister and I even stuffed my backpack full of belongings one day when we decided to play “running away” (We only made it down the street before we decided home was the place for us).

I hope your little trendy girl will have as much fun as I did with my girls backpacks. They’ll get her through the school year, fun times with friends and much more. To make a book bag even more special, get her (or him) one of our kids personalized backpacks from SophiasStyle.com .

Little boys and girls always delight in having their name on a special item that’s all for them! We carry unique, designer bookbags from brands like Ed Hardy and Moda – at sale prices every day.

Pick one out and have it personalized for a fun holiday, birthday or “any day” gift!

Share your backpack memory with us!

Joining the Christian Faith | SophiasStyle.com

Do you remember my friend I told you about who adopted two sisters from India a few months ago? The girls have been here for a few months now and are adjusting very well. My friend says they love to sing, dance and even help pick up around the house! Now that they are settling in, their parents are ready for another big step: baptizing the girls into the Christian faith.

My friend and her husband are very excited for this special moment and I know it means a lot to them. I’m so excited for them and I know I can help them find a beautiful christening dress for each girl from SophiasStyle.com. Of course, since the girls are 5 and 7 years old they won’t wear traditional christening gowns meant for babies. Instead, they’ll wear beautiful white special occasion dresses and 1st communion dresses that will be just perfect for their baptisms.

It’s so great to watch my friend and her family become closer to the girls each day. They are truly a beautiful new family and for sure I’ll be there for this blessed event in their lives!

Wee Squeak Is Totally Unique!

Talk about creative and innovative! We all know that teeny tiny baby shoes are adorable, but now thanks to Wee Squeak, baby shoes also help your little one develop proper walking skills.

Wee Squeak shoes were brought here to the United States after a husband and wife traveled to China to adopt their children. These shoes promote healthy growth by encouraging your little girl to walk the right way, heel to toe. Every time she takes a perfect step the shoes give a little squeak! When you need a little quiet time, you can easily remove the squeak from the heel of the shoe for silent steps.

Wee Squeak baby shoes are functional and stylish – SophiasStyle.com is proud to carry their beautiful dress shoes and delightful summer sandals that are sure to please! And don’t forget that Wee Squeak brand footwear makes great birthday, holiday or baby shower gifts.

When did your baby first start to walk?

Make School Shopping Affordable Again!

As expensive as boys and girls school uniforms are, you’d think they come with gold or diamonds in the pockets. But alas, every year my mom and dad spent a small fortune on my school uniform and we never found any hidden treasures within them.

This year, instead of spending a small fortune, save a small fortune with affordable school uniforms from SophiasStyle.com! We have all the selection and styles that a fancy, expensive uniform store has – pants, sweaters, tops, shorts and even plus size school uniforms – but at a fraction of the cost.

Our school uniforms are from the trusted Classroom Uniforms label, so you know they are made with quality materials and a fabulous, comfortable fit in mind. With the money you save on your kids school uniforms, you can get them that awesome new lunchbox they’ve been eyeing!

Tasty Turkey Day Treats| SophiasStyle.com

Thanksgiving will be here before we know it! Like me, I’m sure you’re planning a feast with all of those holiday favorites – turkey, stuffing, potatoes, pumpkin pie and more. All those traditional foods just say “Thanksgiving” to me and I can’t wait to spend time with my friends and family at the dinner table.

Here’s another tasty treat you can add to your Thanksgiving menu this year. These adorable turkey cookies from Pilsbury! I saw them in the Sunday paper this weekend and loved the idea. This makes a great craft for kids and will help get everyone into the Turkey Day spirit.

Simply use a dot of frosting to add chocolate candies at the center of a sugar cookie for the turkey’s eyes. Pipe a small dollop of frosting onto candy corns and stick them to the top of the cookie for the feathers. To finish up, use gel frosting to add feet and a beat. Voila – a terrific (and tasty) Thanksgiving turkey!

I hope you all have a fabulous Thanksgiving with those you love and cherish. And don’t forget about our girls special occasion dresses at SophiasStyle.com and find a special dress for a special day.

What food are you looking forward to this Thanksgiving? Share with us!

Create Beautiful Memories With Her Communion Dress

I keep a special picture on top of my dresser that I look at every day. It is special to me for many reasons, but like with most pictures, its real importance comes from the people in the photograph.

I stand sandwiched between my grandma and grandpa, smiling a gap-toothed grin at the camera. My hands are folded in reverence and I’m wearing my first communion dress. It’s April of 1995, the day of my First Holy Communion. It was one of the last special events my grandparents were alive to witness. They both died shortly after the picture was taken. I remember that day well and looking at the photo every morning as I get ready for my day brings a smile to my face.

I often wonder what my relationship with my grandparents would be like now. I see the mature, adult relationship my fiancée has with his grandparents and sometimes feel badly that I missed out on that with my own grandma and grandpa. Still, I am grateful to have my special picture.

A girls First Holy Communion is a big event in her life. And just like me, she’ll have memories of it for the rest of her life. There are a lot of special elements to this big day. SophiasStyle.com has dozens of beautiful communion dresses that are perfect for the occasion. You might also celebrate with a cake and gifts. Just don’t forget the most important element – celebrating with the people you love most.

What do you remember about your first communion?

The frigid winter months here at Sophias Style headquarters in Nebraska are always hard for me to deal with. The bitter cold winds, dirty slush on the streets and hours cooped up inside are not my favorite. Come back summer!

Just Dance!

As a little girl I was always jealous of girls who danced. I admired all the pretty girls dancewear – the sparkly leotards, the fluffy tutus – and wished I could be graceful too. Unfortunately, I was more a girl of the shy, tomboy, clumsy variety. Except for one summer when I was six years old I took a dance class at our local community center…

The big finale of my summer dance class had two performances: a slow, interpretive number about a butterfly and a high energy dance to the ever-popular song “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” from the movie Mary Poppins. (In case you were wondering, yes I had to look up how to spell it!) I was so excited for the big show. My sister, my mother and her friend Alice even came to watch.

For the first song my dance group decided we would be caterpillars who grew into beautiful butterflies. Apparently I spaced off during that discussion. I decided to be a sleeping butterfly instead of flying away. As each of my classmates fluttered away I lay down and went to sleep. I must have looked so silly and my fellow dancers just look confused. My mom videotaped the performance, so I got to re-live it over and over.

My second performance started off great but ended in even more embarrassment. We were running, jumping and cart wheeling to the music like crazy – I loved it! At the very end I cart wheeled right into one of my fellow dancers. We both toppled over and sat stunned as the music ended. It was a real America’s Funniest Home Videos moment for sure.

So all in all, my experience with dance could have gone better. But honestly, it couldn’t have been any more fun either! And isn’t that what it’s all about when you’re a little girl?

Outfit your tiny dancer in girls dance shoes and dancewear from SophiasStyle.com and just encourage her to have fun. She’ll make great memories on stage and feel like a star.

Does your little girl dance? Share a memorable dancing moment with us!

Tips To Pick A Christmas Dress

Less than eight weeks until Christmas is upon us – yikes! Those weeks will fly by and I am not even close to ready. I’ve only bought one gift so far, and have no idea what my plans are for the holidays. I’m sure a lot of you can sympathize. It seems the holidays creep up on us quicker and quicker every year.

Still, as long as we start now there’s still plenty of time to pull everything together. One of those details might be her Christmas dress. Of course you want a beautiful, boutique Christmas dress at an affordable price, (and SophiasStyle.com has got you covered here!) but there is more to consider than just cost.

Consider the age of the child you are buying for. Is it a young girl who will be running around playing all day? If so, a shorter dress (knee or tea length) is a good bet. This way she won’t drag it all over the floor or trip over a long dress. Longer styles generally work better for older girls – they can better pull off a long, elegant look.

Also think about the climate you live in. If temperatures are sub-freezing, a long-sleeved dress might work best. If your Christmas tree is a palm tree, opt for short sleeves. Just think about what she will be most comfortable in.

Think outside the “red and green mold.” A cute Christmas dress can still be festive and appropriate even if it’s not traditional holiday colors. The shape and material are what really make Christmas dresses special. This pink and brown taffeta dress is perfect for a holiday occasion.

SophiasStyle.com has got every length, sleeve and color you need to make her holiday look a great one. Now if only we could hang those Christmas lights for you!

Who on your list is hardest to shop for? Share your tips and ideas with us!

Wedding Planning Isn’t Just for Women | SophiasStyle.com

I’ve learned there are lots of surprises that come up when you are planning your wedding. For example, while planning our guest list, my fiancée and I have found that we’ve got a lot more distant relatives than we thought. I mean really, do we have to invite my mom’s third cousin whose last name we can’t even remember? The small affair we were dreaming of is quickly ballooning into an event with loads of guests.

One much more pleasant surprise is how involved my fiancée has been in the wedding planning process. I always thought men were supposed to be bored to tears by all this wedding preparation. However, all the latest bridal magazines and articles will tell you that more and more men are helping plan their weddings. I think it’s great. I’ve always hated the idea that it is supposed to be “my day.” It is our wedding and I think it my fiancée should get the chance to be involved in the details of our special day.

Time is also a big factor. My fianc̩e and I are both busy with work, school and our everyday lives. A wedding is too big of an event for just one person to plan Рwe need both sets of our hands in just to cover the bases!

Alright, so maybe he doesn’t jump up and down at the mention of flower girl dresses or centerpiece arrangements, but my fiancée is definitely willing to be involved. We toured several reception venues together before we made a decision and we also picked out our photographer as a team. The other day he called to ask if there were any phone calls he could make to help out. He booked our DJ over his lunch break so now we can cross that off our list.

Of course, there are some things my fiancée just won’t touch – like the flower girl dress. Luckily, that was an easy job for me anyway. SophiasStyle.com has tons of affordable flowergirl dresses so we got a great dress and saved money. I’m glad we found a cheap flower girl dress but didn’t sacrifice any quality or style.

All in all, planning our wedding has been a fun experience – and we’ve still got five months to go! I’ll keep you posted.

What do you think about men and wedding planning? How involved was your groom?

Trick-or-treat Safely This Halloween | SophiasStyle.com

Each day this week brings us closer and closer to the fun and festivities of Halloween. We’re all busy putting the finishing touches on Halloween costumes and making sure the candy bucket is stocked full for all those adorable trick-or-treaters. It’s great to be prepared for all the fun parts of the holiday, but we should also be prepared to make this Halloween fun and safe.

Of course there are those basic Halloween safety tips we always hear, such as:

• Don’t let children trick-or-treat alone. They should always be accompanied by a responsible adult.

• Don’t accept candy or food that is unwrapped.

• Wear reflectors or light clothing that will stand out in the dark. This is a good idea even in the daylight.

• Use the sidewalk, not the street, when trick-or-treating.

It’s always good to be reminded of safety tips we’ve heard before, but we at SophiasStyle.com found some good Halloween safety tips that don’t immediately come to mind. Here are some other things to think about:

• If your child is going to wear a mask as part of his or her costume, make sure the eye openings are large. Obscured vision can be very dangerous. Consider doing without the mask altogether. You can still achieve a spooky look with make-up or face paint.

 • Think of the trick-or-treaters visiting your house too. Make sure your porch or walkway is free of garden hoses, flower pots or other things someone could trip on. While you’re at it, make sure porch lights have working bulbs. If not, get replacements in time for trick-or-treaters.

• Serve a healthy and tasty meal for your kids before they trick-or-treat. Try something festive like these pumpkin shaped sandwiches. This way they will be less likely to gorge on too many sweets and get a tummy ache later on. Remind them that the candy will still be there tomorrow – they don’t need to eat it all at once!

• Don’t forget about your pets on Halloween! They might get scared with so many trick-or-treaters coming and going. They could escape through the open door or worse yet, bite or scratch a child. It’s best to keep them in a separate room for the night. Check on them every once in awhile to make sure they are O.K.

All of us at SophiasStyle.com hope you all have a safe and FUN Halloween!

We Had A Spook-tacular Time At The Omaha Zoo

So all of us at SophiasStyle.com are still recovering from the great time we had at the Omaha Henry Doorly Zoo Spooktacular trick-or-treat event on Sunday. We couldn’t have asked for a better day – we even had a little sunshine!

There were about 11,000 people in attendance and man were all those kids in costumes super cute! Some of our favorites were a robot with real light up features, a group of triplets all dressed alike as Shrek and two families that dressed as the superhero clan The Incredibles. Here are some photos from the event http://www.flickr.com/photos/tierneyphotography/sets/72157622665058528/

I wish you all could have made it out to see us. We had our girls clothing on display and our sister company SweetGourmetGifts.com handed out delicious baked goods to the guests. I think we’ll definitely partner with the zoo again next year! Hope you can make it then!

Warm Pajamas For Chilly Weather

It seems like we skipped Fall and went right into Winter this season. I’ve already got an extra blanket on my bed to help combat those chilly nights and I can’t believe it’s almost November already! I can’t complain too much though – chilly fall mornings means my husband makes his famous pumpkin pancakes with sausage for breakfast. It’s a great family tradition of ours that really warms my heart and my tummy!

My daughters love waking up to warm breakfast and a hug from Dad too. I love seeing them stumble down the steps with sleepy eyes and snuggly pajamas on! At SophiasStyle.com we’ve got a great selection of girls robes and girls pajamas that are great for breakfast in bed, lounging while watching cartoons or reading bedtime stories together.

Don’t forget our Christmas pajamas for opening presents on Christmas morning. That’ll be the biggest breakfast feast of the year for my family!

What is your favorite breakfast? Sound off!

Time Management Tip for Moms | Delegate Your To Do List

Yes, this is a children's clothing fashion blog, but my guess is that most people reading this are Moms. As a stay at home mom of 2, a wife, a runner, and a business owner (of Sophias Style Children's Clothing Boutique), I have to manage my time in order to get everything done in a very short 24 hour period (and I often struggle with this). However, I have come up with a few strategies for time management, perfect for all you busy, busy moms.

Delegate. And let me add, delegate the things you HATE to do (laundry, for me). Who do you delegate laundry to? Well, I found a great answer: the babysitter. Seriously. My husband and I have a babysitter once a week for a much needed 'date night.' The sitter puts them to bed by 8, and we don't get home until 10. That leaves 2 whole hours for a 'Sitter To Do' list (rather than the male dreaded 'Honey To Do' list), which includes a laundry list (ha!) of some of those 'To Do's' I just can't get to. Here are some great To Do ideas for your sitter:
  • Fold and put away laundry
  • Run dishwasher, and empty
  • Sweep and 'pick up' kitchen
  • Wrap presents
Now, there is one caveat I need to warn you about if you choose to delegate some of your Mom responsibilities...But I don't have time for that right now. You will have to wait for my next post!

Do you let your sitter help around the house? Do you pay extra for this? What are some of the things they help you with? Please share your tips and ideas!

Creative Gift Giving | SophiasStyle.com

Gift giving is good for the soul. I love seeing a person’s eyes light up and their mouth break into a smile when they open a gift that I put a lot of thought and care into giving them. There is truly something magical and heartwarming about that feeling.

Although the end result is great, sometimes it can be a long and frustrating process finding that unique and meaningful (but still affordable) gift. Nowadays little girls can be especially hard to shop for. Children today have so many toys and gadgets that they all seem to run together and many of them never even get used. My advice on gift ideas for girls is to keep it simple! These days simplicity can be a novel concept – we are so used to our complicated, busy lives and little girls are no different!

Instead of another new gizmo that is just like everything else she already has, consider a gift that is useful and beautiful, like this polka-dot piggy bank from SophiasStyle.com. It’s a great decoration for her room and you can help her learn the value and importance of saving.

Books also make great gifts for little girls (or boys!) These personalized musical books from SophiasStyle.com have a place to insert a picture of the child and it plays music while you read. She’ll never have another book like it! Sharing a story together will create more memories than any cell phone or video game ever could.

Who is hardest to shop for on your list? Share your thoughts!

Unique Gifts For Baby | SophiasStyle.com

So here’s the latest news from my friend in Houston, TX who’s having a baby girl this spring. This week she’s begun decorating the nursery. Now, my friend is an art teacher so she is always coming up with creative and artistic ideas that put amateur crafters like me to shame. The baby’s new room is no exception. I’m not sure where she got the idea, but my friend has decided to decorate the walls of her nursery with the baby’s footprints.

She painted the walls a neutral beige color and a few weeks after the baby arrives she’ll stamp the walls with tiny brown, green and blue feet. I have to admit, it’s a pretty cool idea. It will add a cool personal touch to the room and no other baby will have a nursery exactly like hers! I’m excited to see the finished product.

No matter how she decorates the nursery, she’ll still need newborn baby girl clothes to fill the closet! Luckily I’ve got that part of the deal covered. Since I work for SophiasStyle.com I am up-to-date with all the cutest and most affordable newborn clothing for girls. I can’t wait to shop for the new baby!

What do you think of the footprint idea? Would you do it in your nursery?
